SHOOTING DRILLS

Tactical and Advanced Drills  (easiest to hardest)  Videos for each Drill are in Brown

  

CONFIDENCE DRILL   (STEP BACK DRILL)

Setup: 1 steel target starting at 10 yards away

Action: Draw, controlled pair. If two hits, then step back 2 yards. Continue moving farther away until you can’t hit twice with the same speed and accuracy. Repeat drill doing a controlled triple and step back every time you achieve 3 hits on pace

Goal: All hits at an ever-increasing range

Focus: Proper grip, pointing, aiming, trigger mechanics, recoil control and timing


9 HOLE DRILL

Setup: 1 target, 1 V-Tac barricade, 10 yards away

Action: Draw, shoot one shot from each hole top to bottom. 

Goal: 9 hits on steel

Focus: Barricades, cover and concealment


BILL DRILL

Setup: 1 target 20, 15 or 10 yards away

Action: Draw, 6 shots 

Goal: 6 A-zone hits, (5, 4, 3 seconds)

Focus: Forward Posture, consistent grip, recovery sight picture, and trigger reset

  

HALF and HALF DRILL

Setup: 1 target 20, 10, 5 yards away

Action: 3 Separate runs starting at 20 yards. Draw 10 shots at three different ranges.

Goal: 30 A-zone hits (12, 6, 3 seconds)

Focus: Same as Bill Drill (Forward Posture, consistent grip, recovery sight picture, and trigger reset) except slow down at 20 yards and a hammer drill at 5 yards

 

2 DRILL

Setup: 2 targets, 2 yards apart, 20 feet away

Action: Draw, 2 controlled pairs

Goal: 4 A-zone hits, 2 seconds

Focus: Draw, flash sighting, multi shot and transition


10 DRILL (shot timer, metronome and camera required)

Phase 1

Setup: 1 target, 10 yards away

Action: Shoot 10 shots in 10 seconds (1 second between shots. use a timer and metronome). Repeat drill and reduce time 1 second at a time, till 10 shots in 4 seconds (Continue to work on sight adjustments between each shot)

Goal: 10 A-zone hots with consistent split times

Focus: Accuracy (Sight adjustments between each shot) and pacing 

Film all 10 shots and check:

1. Gun recovery in gun box

2. No arm compression, no rearward body movement

3. Trigger reset on all 10 shots

4. Firm consistent left-hand grip not changing between shots

Phase 2

Setup: 3 targets, 1 yard apart, 10 yards away

Action: 1 shot on each target back and forth, working transitions. 10 shots in 10 seconds. Reduce time till 10 shots in 4 seconds

Goal: 10 A-zone hots with consistent transition times

Focus: Accuracy, pacing and consistency with weapon recovery and aiming, transitions 


1-5 DRILL  (PACING/CADENCE DRILL) (shot timer required)

Setup: 3 targets, 1 yard apart (Left Center Right), 5+ yards away

Action: Draw, 1 shot on Left Target, 2 shots on Center Target, 3 shots on Right Target, 4 shots on Center Target, 5 shots on Left Target

Goal: All times + /- 10%, 15 silhouette hits

Focus: Transitions, consistent pace between all shots (Splits and Transitions)


3R3R3 RELOAD DRILL

Setup: 1 steel or silhouette target 10 yards away

Action: Draw, 3 shots, Reload, 3 shots, Reload, 3 shots

Goal: 9 Silhouette hits, consistent pace

Focus: 3 steps of the Reload with as many magazines as you carry 


BAER STANDARD DRILL  (5th SFG)

Setup: 1 target, 2 6"x4" vertical rectangles, 3" center circle. 3, 5 or 7 yards away.  1 x 10 round mag loaded, 1 x 3 round mag ready

Action: Draw, 5 shots left rectangle, 5 shots right rectangle. Slide lock reload, 3 shots center circle 

Goal: 13 hits between 5-9 seconds 

Focus: Pacing, accuracy and reload 


TRIPLE THREAT DRILL

Setup: 3 V-TAC targets, 1 yard apart, 5 yards away

Action: Draw, Center Target 3 chest, 1 head, 1 pelvis, next 2 targets same

Goal: 15 in the zone hits, consistent pace

Focus: Transitions to different targets and areas, and pacing


TRI LAMBDA DRILL

Setup: 3 targets 1 yard apart at 3-4 yards

Action: Draw, Controlled pair x 3, reload repeat, reload, repeat. (Try position 3). 

Goal: 18 A-zone hits

Focus: Transitions, Reloads, Consistent Pace between all shots (Splits and Transitions)


EL PRESIDENTE

Setup: 3 targets, 1 yard apart, 10 yards away 

Action: Face away/Turn/Draw, 2 shots on 3 targets, reload, repeat

Goal: 12 A-zone hits, consistent pace

Focus: Transitions, Reload, and Pacing


DRIVING THE GUN DRILL

Setup: 5 targets numbered L to R 1-5, 1 yard apart, 10 yards away

Action: Draw, 1 shot Target 1, 2, 1, 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 1, 4, 1, 3, 1, 2, 1 

Goal: 15 A-zone hits

Focus: Transitions


3 STYLE DRILL

You will need a shot timer set to a PAR time or a stopwatch and an observer.

Setup: 1 target, 7 yards away

Action: 3 separate runs

Face Away/Turn/Draw shoot 5.5 seconds 2 handed. 

Face Away/Turn/Draw shoot 6.5 seconds strong hand only. 

Face Away/Turn/Draw shoot 7.5 seconds support hand only

Goal: All A-zone hits, count total number of A-zone hits in allotted time

Focus: Accuracy, non-traditional grips, trigger control and weapon recovery


TRIPPLE NIPPLE

Setup: 1 target starting at 15 yards

Action: #1 15 yards. Draw, 10 shots in 10 seconds 2 handed. #2 10 yards. Draw, 10 shots in 10 seconds strong hand only. #3 7 yards. Draw, 10 shots in 10 seconds support hand only. 

Goal: 30 A-zone hits

Focus: Non-traditional grips, trigger control and weapon recovery


EL POLLO DIABLO

Setup: 6 targets, 1 yard apart, 10 yards away

Action: Draw, shoot each target one time 2 handed (6 shots), reload,  6 shots strong hand only, reload, 6 shots support hand only. 

Goal: 18 A-zone hits

Focus: Non-traditional grips, trigger control, weapon recovery, transitions and reloads


FIGURE 8 DRILL

Setup: 1 target, 2 barrels 3 yards apart, 10 yards away. 

Action: Start figure 8 around the barrels with your pistol at low ready (position 3), 10 shots while moving

Goal: 10 A-zone hits, Controlled pace, consistent split times. 

Focus: Grip, recoil control, flash sighting and random movement

 

3 DRILL

Setup: 3 targets, 2 yards apart, 3 yards away 

Action: Draw, 3 controlled triples while retreating to 7-9 yards

Goal: 9 A-zone hits, 3 seconds

Focus: Draw, movement, flash sighting, recoil control and transitions


HIGHSMITH DRILL

Setup: 2 barricades 6 yards apart. 2 steel targets at 20 yards, one in front of each barricade. 3 silhouettes 1 yard apart at 7 yards from the barricades, between the steel targets

Action: Draw from behind the barricade. Shoot twice on steel, one from left side and one from right side. Move laterally between barricades and take controlled triples on each silhouette target. Reload behind second barricade. Repeat from other side and end with 2 more shots from the first barricade. 

Goal: 24 hits (6 barricade shots on steel , 18 moving A-zone hits on silhouettes)

Focus: Barricades and movement

  

ZIG ZAG DRILL

Setup: 2 Steel targets, one on either side of 3 Silhouettes, 1 yard apart

4 cones/barrels in a square, 3 yards apart, 12-15 yards away from the targets

Action: Start behind the square and stay outside the square. 

Draw, go around left side of the square, while advancing- controlled triple on left steel target, move left to right in front of the square, controlled pairs on each silhouette target, retreat to back right corner of the square, reload from cover. From right side of the square, while advancing- controlled triple on right steel target, move right to left in front of the square, controlled pairs on each silhouette target. Retreat to cover behind the square.

Goal: 18 hits. 6 on steel while advancing, 12 on silhouettes while traversing

Focus: Movement and pacing

Alternate Setup: Use 3 targets and shoot the closest target while advancing

Alternate Drill: Add controlled-triples while retreating on the steel targets for a total of 24 shots


RANDOM DRILL

Setup: 3 targets, 2 yards apart. 2 barrels 3 yards apart, 7-10 yards away, 

Action: Start figure 8 around the barrels from low ready (position 3)

Instructor: Calls out a target (Left/Center/Right)

Shooter: Controlled pair on that target, then low ready

Goal: All A-zone hits on the correct targets

Focus: Thinking, moving and flash sighting

Shooting drills should focus on only a few techniques per drill.  Make sure you realize exactly what the focus is and use the drills to work on new skills and for fixing your weaknesses. Incorporate your dry fire drills prior to and while working on  these drills.   These drills are mini scenarios which combine some reality and training together.  We utilize all of these drills in our Tactical 2 Drills Course
